Samsung Galaxy S20 review
The Samsung Galaxy S20 is a powerful flagship phone with a sleek 120Hz display, 5G and advanced cameras in a compact design
Like its larger and more expensive siblings, the Galaxy S20 ($ 999) gives you a 120Hz fluid display, a powerful new camera system with enhanced zoom and 5G speed. However, the battery life is not the best and you still can't get this Verizon phone.
If you want a larger 6.7-inch screen, check out our Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus preview; it is our favorite of the three new Galaxy S20 phones. And if you want a more powerful 10x with no zoom and a 6.9-inch monster, check out our review of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
Overall, we really love the Galaxy S20 for what it packs in such a sleek package. Check out our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S20 below.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Overview: Price and Release Date
The Samsung Galaxy S20 has a release date of March 6 and is available now. The Galaxy S20 costs $ 999 and comes with 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB of standard storage. You can't opt for a model with more RAM or storage, but you can add up to 1 TB of storage via the phone's microSD card slot.
The Galaxy S20 is available through Samsung, as well as through three of the four largest wireless carriers in the United States, including AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Verizon will offer the Galaxy S20 in Q2 which is compatible with its mmWave 5G network.

Overview of Samsung Galaxy S20: Design
The Samsung Galaxy S20 doesn't look radically different from the Galaxy S10, but it has some better refinement. The front camera section is smaller this time and is positioned in the upper center of the display instead of the right, so it's less of a distraction. In addition, the display has less curve to it, which I appreciate because it has less chance of accidental touch when you just switch the phone in your hands.
I feel like it's not a big deal at this stage, but it's definitely noticeable that the Samsung Galaxy S20 doesn't include a headphone jack. This is the first Galaxy S flagship to have this option, so you'll probably want to check out our best wireless headphones and best wireless headphone recommendations. If you want to keep it in the family of the brand, check out the new Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus, which promises 11 hours of battery life.
The color options of the Samsung Galaxy S20 are not exciting, but at least there is variety. In the United States you will find three colors of Galaxy S20 in Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue and Cloud Pink. I'm partial to lighter Cloud Blue, just because it looks and feels new. I'd love to see something more appealing, as the finish of the Aura Glow we saw in our review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.
Overview of Samsung Galaxy S20: Cameras
Samsung lags behind Apple and Google in picture quality, but the Galaxy S20 looks to beat the competition with larger sensors, larger zooms and new features that make shooting and sharing easier.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 has a triple rear camera that starts with a 12 MP wide sensor that is 1.8 microns wide. The phone's lens uses a 64 MP sensor, which is 0.8 microns, and the ultra-wide 12MP camera uses a 1.4-micron sensor.
Why am I rattling all these numbers? Well, the larger the sensor, the more light it allows, which should result in brighter and sharper images. For comparison, the Galaxy S10's wide-angle, telephoto and ultra-wide-angle cameras were 1.4, 1 and 1 microns, respectively. Thus, at least two of the lenses are significantly larger.
Indoors under normal lighting conditions, the Galaxy S20 captures a more tasty look of these cookies. You can remove the nooks and crannies - and put the cookies in dark chocolate - though Samsung has had help with its Scene Optimizer mode that automatically detects food.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 does not have the monster of the Galaxy X20 Ultra 100x Space Zoom, but it has a higher zoom than the Galaxy S10. Zoom optical zooms up to 3x assumed to be lossless, and digital zoom up to 30x. As you get closer to 30x, the camera's view becomes awkward, but overall this is a 2x zoom enhancement for the Galaxy S10.
In our first zoom test of Chrysler's building a few blocks away, the Galaxy S20 captured a darker but clearer picture of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. There's a little more noise in the iPhone recording.
I noticed a dramatic difference when we set the zoom of both phones to 10x, which is a digital zoom. You can find out more details in the building and windows of the Galaxy S20 photo. With the iPhone 11 Pro Max, you can say it's about zoom photography, but with the Samsung phone you're just closer to the subject.
Samsung Galaxy S20 cameras didn't shine in all situations. With this flower bouquet, I would give preference to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which shows more color gradations and delivers and an overall brighter image. However, the photo of the C20 gives more details in the center of the flower.
I also give preference to the iPhone 11 Pro Max over the Samsung Galaxy S20 in this portrait. My face is lighter and more appears in the S20 image, but the iPhone does a better job of giving the lines in my shirt and jacket texture, details that are lost in the S20 photo.
If you look closely, the Galaxy S20 also has light issues behind my head in Live Focus mode, as it seems to dig into the sides of my head.
So how about night mode? The Galaxy S20 did a pretty good job of capturing this scene in almost total darkness. You can make USS Enterprise gold in the foreground as clear as you can in the iPhone 11 Pro Max photo. However, the overall picture is lighter than the iPhone because it's easier to see the desk, the spacecraft pedestal, and objects in the background.
My favorite feature of the Samsung Galaxy S20 is Single Take. When you press the shutter button in this mode, the phone takes a series of photos while recording 10 seconds of video. The phone then gives you a gallery of results, including AI Highlight and Ultra Wide Shot, Live Focus Image (Portrait Mode), and Fast Forward Video, which is great for the social and original video.
The Galaxy S20 is a beaver on the front of the video, as it can record 8K video at 24 frames per second. You'll also be able to stream videos to Samsung 8K QLED TVs - if you can afford it - and shoot 33 MP 8K videos that you may want to share.
I'll update this review of the Galaxy S20 with my impressions once we can access the 8K monitor, but I can say the shots looked very clear on the Retina Display on my MacBook Pro. I could easily describe the gradations of the bark in the surrounding trees and even the fine details in the blue human skirt 50 meters away.
The front camera of the Samsung Galaxy S20 uses a 10 MP sensor, which is 1.22 microns and f / 2.2 aperture. It's the same resolution and size as the S10's front camera, but it had an f / 1.9 aperture.
The selfie I got with the front camera made my face look a little too smooth, a problem we found with the Galaxy S20 Plus. At least the Galaxy S20 did a great job catching the points in my shirt and my hair.
Overview of Samsung Galaxy S20: Display
While helping you with a fast processor, the screen refresh rate can make the phone feel smooth in day-to-day operations, whether you're surfing the web or playing games. Samsung's 6.2-inch OLED display has a refresh rate of 120Hz, which is more than twice the 60Hz rate of the Galaxy S10 and higher than the 90Hz OnePlus 7T screen.
Another plus? The Samsung Galaxy S20 sports a new 240Hz touch sensor that should be more responsive. In our testing, the Galaxy S20's 120Hz mode felt relaxed when using Chrome and the Twitter app.
When using the phone during our hands-free hands, the Galaxy S20 feels pretty fluid and you can easily switch between 60Hz and 120Hz in the on-screen settings menu. The bad news is that the 120Hz selection dials the resolution down from four HD to full HD.
The Galaxy S20 has one of the smartest and most colorful screens we've ever tested. The OLED screen recorded very high 857 nits with average brightness, which is even brighter than the light iPhone 75 Pro with a brightness of 752 nits.
The S20 panel also hit an impressive 162.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is cited at only 83% for the iPhone 11 Pro. The only area where the iPhone sets this Galaxy apart is color accuracy; The S20 turned into a Delta-E score of 0.37 (where 0 is a perfect score), compared to 0.27 on the iPhone 11 Pro.
Overview of Samsung Galaxy S20: Performance
As the first phone with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 processor, the Samsung Galaxy S20 should provide high speed, especially since it is paired with robust 12 GB of RAM. Samsung gives you control over how you use this memory, as you can specify up to three applications that need to be stored directly in RAM. The result should be nearly instantaneous load time for resource-intensive applications and games.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with 128 GB storage and does not have a 512 GB model like the Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra. Fortunately, you can add up to 1 TB of storage via the microSD card slot.
The Galaxy S20 performed very well in a variety of benchmarks, including the Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance. The S20 hit 3,147 on the multi-core part of the test, which is the best result we've seen on an Android phone. The iPhone 11 Pro's A13 Bionic processor achieved an even higher 3,509, so Apple is still in the lead.
At the GFXBench (Aztec Ruins Vulkan off-screen) graphics test, the Galaxy S20 reached 1,319 frames (21 frames per second), beating the OnePlus 7T (1,169). The iPhone 11 Pro recorded 2,174 frames or 33.8 fps higher.
To test the actual performance of the Galaxy S20, we ran 4K video at 1080p, after applying effect and transition to Adobe Rush. The Galaxy S20 took 1 minute and 15 seconds, improving the Galaxy Note 10's time by 1:34. The iPhone 11 Pro took only 46 seconds.
Overview of Samsung Galaxy S20: 5G
At launch, the Galaxy S20 only works on 6-GHz 5G networks, such as T-Mobile. However, Verizon says there will be a version of the Galaxy S20 that supports 5G mmWave in Q2.
In my speed tests over the T-Mobile network, I saw very good speeds in some locations and poor performance elsewhere. For example, in downtown Jersey, the Jersey Galaxy S20 downloads reached as high as 183 Mbps, but in New York the phone recorded as high as 5.2 Mbps with a 5G icon.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Overview: Battery Life and Charging
Given its 5G connectivity and 120Hz display, the Samsung Galaxy S20 will need a beef battery to carry you through the day. Samsung also responded to the call with a 4,000 mAh battery in this phone. The Galaxy S10 had a 3,400 mAh battery, so this is a pretty big jump.
Unfortunately, the Galaxy S20 suffered an average of just 9 hours and 31 minutes while setting to 60Hz during two sessions of Tom's Guide's regular battery test, with devices constantly loading web pages over the T-Mobile network until battery drain.
Phones with the best battery life last for 11 to 12 hours. The Galaxy S20 Plus lasted a decent 10 hours and 31 minutes and the Galaxy S20 Ultra hit in epic 12:03.
How does the regular S20 compare to the leaders at similar prices? The iPhone 11 Pro lasted 10 hours and 24 minutes in the same test, and last year's Galaxy S10 managed 10 hours and 19 minutes. The iPhone 11, which costs $ 300 less than the Galaxy S20, sold even better than both for 11 hours and 16 minutes.
After the S20 completed these tests, we went back and ran two more, now with a refresh rate of 120Hz. This time, the phone lasted an average of 8 hours and 4 minutes - almost an hour and a half less than it did when operating at 60Hz.
Users of electricity or those who are particularly concerned about their device that lasts a day or more will instead want to take a look at the Galaxy S20 Plus or Galaxy S20 Ultra. But with devices requiring a $ 200 and $ 400 premium over the standard S20, respectively, that peace of mind will not diminish.
The Galaxy S20 comes with a 25-watt charging adapter in a box that can take the device from empty to 53 percent in half an hour. It also supports 15-watt wireless charging with compatible brackets.
Overview of Samsung Galaxy S20: Software
The Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with Samsung's new One UI 2 software, which streamlines the interface to make it easier to switch to your favorite apps, change settings, and more. This drives the top of Android 10, which includes great new features like Smart Response, Dark Mode and improved privacy controls.
Samsung is also trying to build better experiences in the Galaxy S20, starting with Google Duo integration. Google's Response to FaceTime, this video chat app is built into your phone dialer and contacts app and you can chat with up to 8 people in the video. Plus, for the first time you can chat with video in Full HD.
I made a video call on the Google Duo with my colleague, Adam, and appreciated that I could start a video call right from the phone app. He said it looked pretty clear coming through his Pixel 4, and his face and voice were clear at my end after some initial shock absorbers.
Other features of the software include Music Sharing to share your Bluetooth connection with your car (so someone else can control the playlist for a while) and integrate Spotify with Bixby routines so that the Samsung Galaxy S20 will recommend playlists based on your desires, even at the moment of the day.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Review: Verdict
At $ 999, the Samsung Galaxy S20 isn't cheap, but it's the most affordable new Galaxy S20 phone. It's also the most compact phone in the lineup of Samsung's flagships, making it the best choice for those looking for an Android device that won't use out of pocket or needs two hands to work with. The show's release is a new camera that impresses with new features like Single Take and more powerful zoom.
The biggest reason for not getting the Galaxy S20 is its battery life. Running time is about an hour behind the iPhone 11 Pro, and that delta increases to nearly 2.5 hours with the S20 120Hz display mode enabled.
Overall, our top choice among Samsung's new Android phones is the Galaxy S20 Plus, as it offers more display and more durability. But for that you will have to reach $ 1,199. If you prefer a smaller device, you should be very pleased with the regular Galaxy S20.
